NAC recently decided to brand its Social Responsibility projects. The name given to these is Ukupha (the Zulu word meaning giving). Easter Charity Campaign 2008 "A success"
NAC support The Society for Animals in Distress (SAID) in Midrand for their 2008 Easter charity campaign. An amount of R5 475 was raised by individuals and departments within the company. With the money raised, 52 animals will be sterilised through the SAID sterilization project.
SAID is not involved in the rescue and homing of animals, but is the single largest welfare provider of professional veterinary care in South Africa. Through extensive education of low-and no-income earners, they constantly strive to create responsible animal ownership, and the sustainable health and well-being of animals in areas where veterinary care is not available.
Trained Fieldworkers are responsible for treating animals on site from Mobile Clinics equipped with veterinary supplies. The sterilisation of domestic pets is strongly promoted by SAID. Animals requiring intensive care or surgery are transported from the townships to the SAID headquarters, where they are attended to by qualified veterinarians and support staff in a caring environment.
Education is a very important part of what the organisation does. Thousands of children from primary schools in the area benefit from their education initiative each year and staff seize every available opportunity to educate animal owners on the role of primary veterinary care in the prevention of illness. They are taught to recognise and identify symptoms, and contact SAID for intervention. This significantly reduces the incidence of death and euthanasia.
