When every second counts, aero-medical emergency services can mean the difference between life and death for the patient. We operate several helicopters equipped with state-of-the-art EMS equipment. These helicopters, situation dependant, can be hired for use and put on standby for sporting events and/or patient transport, etc.

What the Programme Covers

Our first-year Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic training programme runs for approximately 35 weeks and includes:

• Safety training, hand tools, and measuring instruments
• Reciprocating and turbine engine systems
• Aircraft hardware, hydraulics, avionics, and more
• Maintenance of both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft
• Introduction to Civil Aviation Regulations
• Practical assessments and theoretical phase tests

Career Path & Certification

Graduates who successfully complete the first year may be selected for On-the-Job Training at NAC facilities (subject to availability). After completing a TETA logbook and meeting required experience hours, students may apply to write their Trade Test and qualify as certified Aircraft Maintenance Mechanics.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible, you must have:

• Grade 12 (N3) with Mathematics, Physical Science, and English (50% minimum)
• Preferably under 25 years old
• A strong interest in aviation and mechanical systems
• N4 Aircraft Technology or Aircraft Maintenance Theory is an advantage

1. What is an Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic?

An Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of aircraft to ensure they meet safety and performance standards. This includes working on both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

2. Where is the training held?

Training is conducted at the NAC Technical Training Academy, located at Rand Airport in Germiston, South Africa.

3. What accreditations does the training have?

The programme is accredited by the following bodies:

• South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA /1193/ATO)
• Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO SDP 1220/18/00312)
• Transport Education Training Authority (TETA 18/08-001)

4. How long is the training programme?

The first year of training runs for approximately 35 weeks, covering both theoretical and practical training. This is followed by 18–24 months of On-the-Job Training (OJT), if selected.

5. What does the training cover?

The curriculum includes over 35 subjects, such as:

• Aviation safety and regulations
• Engine systems (reciprocating and turbine)
• Helicopter theory
• Aircraft hardware, tools, and materials
• Electrical and hydraulic systems
• Sheet metal work and inspections
• Civil aviation regulations

6. What are the entry requirements?

To qualify, you must have:

• Grade 12 (N3) or equivalent
• Minimum 50% in Mathematics, Physical Science, and English
• Preferably under the age of 25
• Advantageous: N4 Aircraft Technology or Aircraft Maintenance Theory
• Valid study permit (for international applicants)

7. Is there a selection process?

Yes. Only a limited number of students are accepted. Applicants must complete a screening test and interview to be considered.

8. Do I need to pay for the training?

Yes, Year 1 training must be funded by the student, sponsor, or company. Financial assistance or sponsorship is not guaranteed and must be arranged independently.

9. Will I be employed by NAC after the training?

While NAC may offer On-the-Job Training placements to successful students, employment is not guaranteed. Placement depends on availability and performance. Students may also seek OJT with other approved aviation companies.
